The annual kiwifruit harvest is under way and first cab off the rank is the new “RubyRed” variety.

Zespri’s chief grower, industry and sustainability officer, Carol Ward says for the first year commercial volumes of Zespri RubyRed kiwifruit are going on the market and are “keenly anticipated” by consumers here and in Singapore, Japan and China.

Almost all pack houses told NZKGI that they would be paying at least the living wage of $22.75 per hour.

Kiwifruit picking is also expected to exceed the living wage with an average of $27 per hour paid last year when the minimum wage was $20 per hour.

The season has potential to be a record-breaking harvest with a forecast of at least 190 million trays to be harvested, overtaking last year’s record of more than 177 million trays.

Kiwifruit is New Zealand’s largest fresh horticultural export, with more than $2.6 billion in sales of New Zealand fruit made last year. New Zealand has about 2800 growers producing kiwifruit across more than 13,000 hectares between Kerikeri and Motueka.
The kiwifruit industry’s global revenue is expected to jump from over $3.9 billion in 2020 to $6 billion by 2030.
